News

01.03.2009

These days I have been very busy with riding classes. I have been teaching evening classes for the Riding Community Neisti and in the morgnings I offer private riding lessons, which are quite popular. Sandra Marin from Efri-Mýrum and I take care of teaching the youth members from Neisti once a week. I want to give props to Neisti for their active youth work, where 40-50 children take classes for a whole winter. On monday evenings I teach a group of 12 lively women riding skills, which is really fun.

This picture I got from Neisti´s homepage www.neisti.net. They are very good with updating their website regulary and puting up pictures of their activities

We are still working full time at the training facility "Reiđhöllin Arnargerđi" despite the fact that no news have been published here for a very long time. I have a new employee, Ragnhildur Haraldsdóttir, but she is doing the practical part of her studies at the University of Hólar. We have got 22 slots and are very busy at the moment. Most of the horses we have got are in their first training period. Luckily the facility for this kind of training is very good here at Arnargerđi. We plan to update this site more frequently now that I have internet connection again. It is therefore safe for people interested in this site to start paying attention to it again.

We are most sorry for the lack of updates recently. Sibba currently lives in a house with no internet and thus has difficulties communicating all her events on to her website. More news can be expected as soon as Sibba gains internet access again

Last week the old stalls were changed for new ones at the Riding hall. Óli And came with another worker and they got everything finished in just two days. Currently there are three one horse stalls in the house, but it is planned to trade them for one two horse stall, and a single one horse stall which will be done soon. The old stalls are made of iron and are getting so rusty they are practicly a health hazard for the horses. The new stalls are plastic and were bought at Dalvík. The house looks really transformed after the changes that were made. In the picture is Óli with one of the new stalls.

I have been involved with blood taking from pregnant mares in the farm Stóridalur for years. I like working with the mares. The mares must be pregnant when the blood is taken from them because they produce valuable hormones at a certain time of the gestation. As a horse-person and an animal lover I cannot see anything wrong with taking blood from pregnant mares, as long as the mares are taken good care of at all times. A vet administers the phlebotomy so that action is completly professional. I have put on my webpage a series of photos that I took at Stóridalur a short while ago, where the blood taking process is photographed from A to Z. If anyone is interested in this operation, the photos can be seen here.

Summer is almost over. The training has gone well, and I have signed a contract for renting the training hall for another year. I have hired new assistants for this winter as Hedda is returning to Sweden in October, seeking new adventures. She has been invaluable employee of this training facility for a whole year. I will be recieving orders for training this fall. There is still room available for more horses so now is the time to send in orders. From 15th of September my monthly fee is going to be 45.000 ISL (we have inflation good people...). But I have a good feeling about this fall. In the near future there will be a horse gathering at Auđkúluheiđi, followed by the fall training. Some of the horses will soon be ready to be sold, and will be shown on this site soon. The picture on the right was taken by Hanife Mueller, a german girl that has assisted us with the training for few weeks this summer.

This little one is named Sesar and was born at Gilsárteigur in the beginning of June. His father is Tjörvi frá Ketilsstöðum and his mother is Toppa frá Gilsárteigi, daughter of Seimur. He is doing vel, is big and has a long stride. Other news from the horse breeding in East Iceland, is that Elding, daughter of Advari, was bred with Þytur frá Neðra-Seli. She is still with the stallion and we have no news from her yet. We can hopefully expect a foal from her next summer, but that would be her first foal.

Last weekend, Hedda and I went on a horse trip along with some good friend of ours, to Auđkúluheiđi. We took some of our horses with us (those that were shoed) and rode to Áfangi. We rode actually first in Stekkjardaurl, started there on thirsday, and rode along that valley in thetwo days before the weekend. This was great fun, both for us and the horses, to be able to ride new roads in a new environment. On Friday we rode to the house at Áfangi. On Saturday we went for a little trip with two horses, which was very enjoyable. Svavar from Litlidalur was a good guide for this trip. We rode back home on Sunday, and had great weather the whole time. Soon I will publish more pictures from this trip.

Afródíta gave birth to a red mare-foal this week, by Bragi frá Kópavogi. We went yesterday to Stóridalur to look at the foal. The little one was quite jaunty and lively. Víðir had previously threatened that the foal's name would be Helga Braga if it was a mare, but Helgi Braga if it was a stallion. After considerable discussion we decided to comprimise on the name Aþena frá Stóradalur. The picture displays the proud mother and her offspring.

Sibba began working at Reiðhöllin Arnargerði the 16th of June. Sibba has graduated as a riding instructer from Hólar University the 24th of Mai 2008, and will be available for training horses this summer.
Hedvig Ahlsten from Sweden will continue as an assisstent trainer along side Sibba, until next fall.

Víđir bought himself a new horse few days ago. That is a son of Kormákur frá Flugumýri, named Börkur frá Brekkukoti. Víđir broke this horse in last year, and this fall he trained him into tölt. Although Börkur is only four or five months trained, he is 8 years of age already. Víđir bought the horse from Gísli Geirsson, a farmer in Mosfell. Víđir is in hopes that Börkur will be ready for the competition tracks next summer or winter. Börkur is a very promising horse. In the picture are Víđir and Börkur last fall.

It has been a while since the last time this site was updated. The latest news are that Hedvig came back from Sweden at the 6th of January and Sibba started study at Hólar university at the 9th of January. Víđir and Hedvig take complete care of the training station in Blönduós while Sibba lives in Hólar. Everything goes well at the training station and very soon we will update new pictures and information about the young horses in training. At the 12th of January Sibba travelled to Hörgárdalur to take a look at a foal show organiazed by the breeding club Framfari. There the offsprings of the stallion Moli frá Skriđu were very eye catching, they all had very soft body movements and high leg action. Most of them showed all gaits. Sibba immediately decided to take our mare Afródíta to Moli next summer, and we are really looking forward to getting a foal sired by him. On the picture is Moli in competition on ice spring 2007.

At newyears eve we stayed in Gilsárteigur in east Iceland. There we took a look at the horses at that farm, but now there are only six horses. This fall the two oldest horses were put down, Dagur (age 28) and Perla (age 20). Sibba claims that Dagur was the last offspring from Stjarni frá Bóluhjáleigu in Iceland, but if you know better you can leave a note. The horse Dagur was an absolute genious, he was usable for everything and most people could ride him. Sibba started her horsemanship at young age by riding Dagur, and entered her first competition with him. Dagur was totally healthy untill his last day, although his moves had become rather stiff. The horses in Gilsárteigur looked very good when we took a look at them. The 3 year old Grána frá Gilsárteigi, a daughter of Gustur frá Hóli is the one that we think is the most promising horse in that group.
In the picture is Dagur, at age 27.

We ordered a bitless bridle earlier this fall, from bitlessbridle.com. We have been using it just a little bit this fall, and we like it with certain kinds of horses. The bitless bridle is a success with sensitive horses who are stressed, scared of bits, or very unhappy with bits. We do find though, that it doesn’t do much for unsensitive horses that are heavy on the reins. It is good to give cues with it, which is a good quality with bridles. It is possible to use the inside and outside rein in similar way as with normal bridle, and it gives very little pressure on the nose of the horse. Some horses can be sensitive to that. Sibba has used the bitless bridle on her horse Bessi frá Sóleyjarbakka with good results. However, we do still belive that a normal bridle is the best bridle equipment if it is used correctly. It is still good to have the bitless bridle to use for the right occation, and it is normally used at least once a day with some horse. In the picture is Bessi with the bitless bridle.

Christmas is coming soon, and then we will have one less person at our training facility. At the 9th of January, Sibba will begin her studies to be a riding instructer at the University of Hólar. Víðir and the swedish Hedvik will handle the training in 2008. Hedvig will be on vacation from the 17th of December, to the beginning of January. Marie, who has been working with us since this fall, has already quit. We have been decreasing the number of horses we have. We have been renting two houses for the horses, one for 20 horses, another for 13. We will most likely only keep the house that rooms 20 horses in the new year.

We have not had many news worthy events happening lately, the work with training has been going nice and calm. Everything is running smoothly in the riding hall. From our personal lives the biggest news event is that Víðir got a haircut. As can be seen from the pictures, this change had been needed for quite some time now.
Þyts festival 2007 was held two weeks ago, and we attended this event. The festival was great fun, with good food, good band, and really great entertainment. The pictures we took from this event can be seen in our album

Our friend, Ingveldur from Böðvarshólar in W-Húnavatnssýsla, contacted us because she had chosen to use our homepage for an assignment she is doing in her studies at the Agricultural University of Iceland. The assignment was to select a homepage and introduce it to the class. The class then would evaluate it. The main criticism "the class" found, was that the page was grey and colorless; and that to little attention was paid to the main theme of the page, which is training young horses. We will of course consider this criticism and make the appropriate changes! We plan to publish pictures of the young horses, their family tree and more, in the days to come. We thank Ingiveldur for her helpful evaluations. Information about the young horses can be found here.

Sibba recently took an exam to get into University of Hólar, and she got into the university! She will study to become a riding instructer. Her time at the school will be from January untill May 2008. In the exam Sibba used Blær frá Egilsstaðabæ and Bessi frá Sóleyjarbakka. Blær is the son of Andvari which Sibba has borrowed form Ármann Magnússon, a rider from Egilsstaðir. Bessi is begotten by Ögri frá Háholti and Jara frá Laugarvatni, and is owned by Sibba. In the picture is Bessi, his rider is Sindri Sigurðsson.

This weekend we took a trip to East-Iceland, to Hérað. The main purpose of this trip was to return the the horses used for hearding the sheeps, back home to Gilsárteigur. Sibba trains those horses during summer at Blönduós, and we return them in the fall so they can fulfill their duty.
We took the oppertunity to visit the horse farm Tjarnarland, and its master Einar Kr. Eysteinsson with his wife Helga. There are alot of things being done at Tjarnarland. A riding shed is being built, 16x30 m, and the stable is being enlarged to double of its former size. It will be possible to enter the stable from the riding shed. Einar had some horses in the stable when we visited. He will release them soon though, and will work with the renovations until the arrival of the new year. At this time new generation of foals - begotten by Klettur frá Hvammi and Hróður frá Refstöðum - are being raised at Tjarnarland. It will be interesting to see how they fare in the years to come. In the picture is Einar, valiantly renovating with his crowbar.

Yesterday, the 11th of october, was the one month anniversary of our website. At this time, more than 2000 people have visited our site. That is about 500 people per week, which we think is pretty good; specially since our hitcounter only counts individual hits, not repeated hits from the same computer. We are very pleased with how our website has been recieved, but it helped of course that hestafrettir.is published an article about our site, shortly after it had opened. We want to thank Snæbrá Krista Jónsdóttir, the webside designer and current webmaster, for all her work with designing the site, putting it up on the web, and last but not least - for helping us update the site regulary.

Today we got two new training assistents who both come from Sweden. Their name are Hedvik Ahlsten, 21 years old; and Marie Anderson, 19 years old. They plan to stay with us at least until next summer. Mostly they will work with maintenance, but of course they will assist some with with training as well, and learn as much as they can. This is the first time they have been to Iceland, but they both have experience with Icelandic horses in Sweden. We welcome them to our business! Hedvik is to the left on the picture, and Marie to the right.

Well, it was only a matter of time before this happened....... This is the view of our garden this morning. We had planned to go to Víðidalstungurétt today, but didn't since our car is not yet equipped for winter, as most of our horses are as well actually. The good news though are that the new floor in the riding hall is finished. There is a world of difference having horses in the hall these days! The floor is soft enough now, and is good for the horses. We will have to wait and see what will happen to the floor through continuous use; if it will harden, or if it will keep the status quo. It is priceless to have a functional riding hall in bad weather days like these. All organization gets easier and there is less stress for us trainers, as the training is less controled by the weather than it would be otherwise.

We went to Stóridalur today to seperate the foals. There are many foals born each year at Stóridalur, and most of them get slaughtered. It is quite tragic as many of them are beautiful, begotten by award-winning horses and good riding mares. We took some pictures of the most beautiful and promising foals. They can be seen at our picture album. These foals are sold for low prizes, a litle over slaugtering prize, if anyone is interested in them. So take a look at our picture album, and don’t hesitate to contact us, as time is getting short for these foals. No time like the present to make a good bargain!

Yesterday, an in-gathering of horses took place in Auðkúlurétt. Naturally we had to go to greet our young horses. This summer they have been at Hrafnarbjargahólf, which is the horse fence belonging to Svínavatnshreppur and Torfalækjarhreppur. The weather was cool but dry, and we had alot of fun at the in-gathering. We had planned to take our Silfra with us to Blönduós to be trained, but she is still rather small, so we desided to wait a bit with that until she gets a little bigger. We took many pictures at the in-gathering, which can be see in our picture album.

We have recieved the good news that our Hvöt frá Miðsitju is expecting a foal, by Feldur frá Hæli. Earlier this summer, we held Hvöt with Sigur frá Hólabaki, but nothing came out of that. Therefor the held her with Feldur, who is a beautiful three year old stallion, by Hugin frá Haga and Dáð frá Blönduósi. Earlier this summer Afródíta got pregnant by the help of Bragi frá Kópavogi. Thus we are expecting foals from them both next summer. Toppa frá Gilsárteigi is also expecting. She was held back east with Tjörvi frá Ketilsstöðum. In the picture to the right is Bragi frá Kópavogi.

The fall season is at full speed, and we have begun keeping the horses inside. We are now fullbooked until november, but after that we will become more available. Until christmas we have spaces inside for 30 horses, there is room for 20 horses in the riding hall, and we will rent 10 additional spaces in a nearby horse barn. Otherwise the training is going well, although some delays can be expected, due to renovations taking place in the riding hall. Maybe we will salvage the situation by training outside, who knows!

Finally, some long desired renovation have begun taking place inside the riding hall! The gravel has been replaced outside the house, and they have begun the work on the inside. We plan to enlarge the spectator area, make new spectator benches, and partially sement the wall infront of the spectator area. Last, but not least, we are going to replace the floor, as the old floor was getting to hard to be of use. When the renovation is over, the riding hall will be very different, and a lot more enjoyable both for us to work in, as will the comfort of the spectators be much improved. The picture shows Árni Þorgilsson, the riding halls godfather, working hard today inside the riding hall.

We rode down Laxárdalur for the first time, because of the ingathering of horses taking place there. As horse owners in Blönduós, it is only fitting we try participating in this activity at least once. We rode from Strjúgsskarð in Langadalur to Skrapatungurétt, along side a number of people, both foreign and icelandic. It was rather cold, but all in all, an excelent journey. It was fun being “turist” in such a trip. Today the horses were sorted to their rightful owners, at Skrapatungurétt. We took a quick look at the sorting, and took some pictures, which can be seen at our picture album.
